A Qualitative Case Study on the Caring Experiences of Elderly and Middle-aged Injured Workers¡¯ Wives

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide a basis for understanding the experiences of wives of increasing industrial accidents in relation to marital relationships by exploring in-depth experiences of elderly and middle-aged injured worker¡¯s wives using a qualitative case study method. For this purpose, an individual interview were conducted with 6 wives with injured worker husbands. According to the results of the study, the case of living together with and caring for husband occurred under various circumstances in the case analysis. They were living their lives with their own characteristics and strength. However, as there were special difficulties due to the sudden accident of their husband who had been acting as a breadwinner, they need proper mental health support for their spouses. In the case analysis, 5 following theme revealed as ¡®A sudden accident: life of confusion and despair¡¯, ¡®Unappealable industrial insurance: life of conformity and desire¡¯, ¡®Overburdening roles and responsibilities: Lost myself¡¯, ¡®An unspeakable heart: Lonely island¡¯, ¡®Life being continued: time spent and the hope to live forward¡¯. Consequently, this study suggests implications for mental health social work practice that support for wife and family of injured workers should be expanded.
